Social Studies
Sixth grade Social Studies asks students to compare civilizations. We begin with prehistoric hunter gatherers and the first agricultural communities. Surplus food in an agricultural community allows systems of specialization, religion, education, and government to develop. These systems mark the difference between a community and a civilization. As we study a variety of ancient civilizations, the classic civilizations of Greece and Rome, civilizations of the Middle Ages, and European empires of World War I and World War II, we will ask the following questions:
How did the civilization begin?
How and why did the civilization develop?
How and why did the civilization decline?
What are the lasting contributions
of the civilization?
