One of the most popular exhibits in the Smithsonian National Postal Museum is the story of Owney, the scruffy mutt who became the unofficial mascot of the Railway Mail Service in the late 19th century. Owney’s unusual life and wide-spread travels have inspired several children’s books.

During his lifetime, Owney was the most famous dog in America. He traveled all over the country and even around the world! Owney’s home was the Albany, New York post office, but he did not spend much time there. He was at home in any railway mail train car. Mail clerks loved the scruffy little dog and gave him tags for his collar. Over 100 years later, Owney and his tags have a new home at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum.

In Library class, we are using the story of Owney as a way to connect our students with family and friends in other states. Every Tuesday, we are mailing a photo of our mascot Owney to a special person we chose and tracking his travels from state to state across the USA. We are having so much fun watching Owney travel around the country!
