Welcome to First Grade! It is my pleasure to be celebrating my 21st year of teaching with you and your children this year! 17 of those years have been in the Diocese teaching Preschool, 1st and 2nd grades. I taught first grade for nine years and I am thrilled to be your child's first grade teacher this year.
First grade is an exciting time when children enjoy showing what they already know and are eager to learn more! We also explore new responsibilities and a feeling of growing independence. This grade level is a wonderful year of growth as we solidify our reading and math skills from Kindergarten. Together, we will work with the many facets of reading
comprehension and strengthen our reading habits. We will practice living as thoughtful, skilled writers and build strong math connections. It is also an important year for teamwork. Woven throughout it all, will be the knowledge that God loves us as we learn more about Him and our faith.
As I look forward to the year, I know that my teaching must begin with making your child feel safe in our classroom. I will be helping all of the children form a new classroom community made up of unique individuals; each with his or her own learning style, interests, history and hopes.
Just like you, I will be expecting your child to do their very best each day, becoming responsible for their own learning, working hard and being mindful of the part their behavior plays in our classroom community and school. You can help by checking over their homework, reading and
signing their planner (when they come in) each night, making sure they get a good night's sleep and have a healthful breakfast.
Please check our website often for updates on what we have been up to, upcoming events and pictures!
I know we will have a wonderful year full of exciting challenges and new discoveries. I look forward to meeting each of you, getting to know the children and working with your family to create a rewarding first grade year!
